The neighborhood of Congress Park extends from York Street on the west to Colorado Boulevard on the east and from Colfax Avenue south to 6th Avenue. Congress Park itself is located at 9th and Elizabeth Street and features an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, softball fields, a soccer field, playground and picnic area. It started as Denver’s first city nursery in 1903 and was named for the Act of Congress that converted Denver’s former cemeteries from federal to city ownership.
Development in this area began in the early 1900’s and many of the brick Craftsman bungalows and two-story homes were built between 1901 and 1927. This well-established central city neighborhood features an eclectic mix of architectural styles including the Queen Anne, Georgian, Gothic and Dutch Colonial Revivals. The solid and boxy “Denver Square” was also a popular home style constructed between 1910 and 1930. Most of the homes in this neighborhood have been updated or restored.
Congress Park is a very popular, picturesque neighborhood with many tree-lined streets and mature landscaping. The area also encompasses Greek Town which extends along East Colfax Avenue from Columbine Street to St. Paul Street. This six-block section of Denver is a great place to sample traditional Greek food, bakeries and entertainment.
